I thought I had heard every possible scam to defraud the consumer , but I was wrong . Air bag fraud is now becoming a booming area of ripping off consumers and taking away safety protections at the same time . It has been estimated that one out of 25 air bags have been replaced by a dummy or non-working air bags .Air bags cost between $ 2000 and $ 3000 . Car repair shops claim to replace the air bag when it has not done the work . Also , it has been reported some repair shops steal the air bag and resell the part .Further , they claim it went off to scam the insurance company and use a fake to claim they replaced it . Here's what you can do to check to make sure it was replaced . First , use a reputable repair shop . Second , review the repair bill to make sure an air bag was purchased and ask to see the parts box . Third , inspect the steering column and look at the trim . Finally , make sure the indicator light goes on when you start your car . If the light does not come on , they may not be a air bag to activate .
