A tragic ATV accident has sparked a safety debate in Tennessee . In December of 2006 ,a ATV accident claimed the life of one young girl and seriously injured another in Macon County , Tennessee . The accident happened when the ATV swerved off the roadway . Neither girl was wearing a helmet or riding an age appropriate ATV . Also , they were riding on a road . The Tennessee State Legislature may adopt some safety laws for ATV safety . Currently , all riders under the age of eighteen must wear a helmet . The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission recommends that that one always wear a helmet , never ride on a public road , and ride age appropiate ATVs . One proposal is to require mandatory training for younger drivers . However , the central theme is parental supervision in allowing your child to ride an ATV .
