In 1995 , there were were 3.9 million motorcycles registered for street use . Today , there is over 5 million bikes on the roadways . There are new motorcycle drivers every day using the streets and roadways . Everyone must share the roadway . A study by the University of Southern California studied motorcycle crashes on the lack of knowledge of sharing the roadway. The study found that three-quarters of the motorcycle accidents involved hitting another vehicle . In two-thirds of these crashes , the other vehicle did not yield the right-of-way to the motorcycle . The key to motorcycle safety is two fold . One , the driving public must be aware of the motorcyclists . Second , motorcyclists must use the upmost care in their driving .
