Yesterday , I was at a deposition of my expert witness out of state . I was reading the local paper waiting for the deposition to begin when I read a report about some studies on the cost of personal injury litigation . Pacific Research Institute issued a report on the cost of the civil justice system . The report was funded by oil , banking , pharmaceutical and other companies wanting to protect their bottom line . Critics slammed the report as being unreliable . The Economic Policy Institute attacked the science of the report . The EPI stated " All this is a smokescreen for the insurance industry and a lot of large businesses that do not want to be sued". The report by PRI is simply a red herring to deny citizens access to the courthouse.
