Tailgating of automobiles by motorcycles , or motorcycles by cars is a hazardous and dangerous practice . Lack of stopping distance and reduced visiabilty to see conditions ahead leads to wrecks . Use a two second count to determine distance . First , pick a fixed point ahead of the lead vehicle . Once , the lead vehicle has passed . You should be able to count off two seconds before passing the fixed point . Using a safe following distance is one of the easiest ways to avoid a rear end collison . It gives the motorcyclist the oppotunity to see and be seen . Also , it provides more time to react to vehicles ahead.
