N.O. Nursing Home Owners Indicted

The owners of the nursing home near New Orleans where 35 residents died during Hurricane Katrina were indicted on cruelty and negligent homicide charges Wednesday, a little over a year after the storm made landfall. There have been many wrongful death lawsuits filed against the couple by family members of patients who were killed in the storm.

The Manganos have argued that their hurricane plan - to keep frail residents in place with food, water and generators rather than risk moving them - was a responsible course of action, and if the levees had held, the tragedy would have been avoided.

The case against the Manganos is one of two alleging that defendants were responsible for the deaths of elderly or sick people who died after the storm.

Katrina caused the flooding of more than 80 percent of the city of New Orleans and killed more than 1600 people in Louisiana alone.
