Tragedy struck the YMCA here in Nashville this last weekend. A young boy drowned after going down the slide. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this family. After this tragic death , I thought I would write about pool safety issues. My daughter has been a lifeguard for her summer job the last few years and I know the dangers at the pool. Constant supervision of children in and around pools is critical. Do not allow children to swim without a lifeguard on duty. No diving boards unless a lifeguard is on duty , this should also apply to slides. I know my daughter has to be recertified in CPR each year. Check your pool for the lifeguard's qualifications. Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children behind motor vehicle accidents. There is no substitute for supervision . Seconds make a difference.
